Experts from Lithuania reported on conflicts of interest in the activities of judges, May 14, 2015
Mr Virgilijus Valančius, Team Leader of the Project «Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine» and Artūras Driukas Expert from Lithuania, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Lithuania with representatives of the Secretariat of the Commission as part of the EU Project «Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine» held a working meeting on May 14, 2015.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways to implement the provisions of the new legislation on conflicts of interest in the activities of judges.
Mr. Driukas informed participants about the Commission's ethical activity in Lithuania and judicial discipline, which may require any person who has information about conflicts of interest. «We have a judge declares a conflict of interest. In this case, the judge must itself take into account the risk of such a conflict and provide it», said. Mr. Driukas.
In Lithuania, the declaration of conflict of interest of judges has existed for over 10 years. According to Lithuanian experts, it is impossible to provide 100% of all conflict of interest because options may be appropriate.
According to Mr. Valančius, one of the objectives is to assist the Board of Judges of Ukraine in the development of regulations and conflict of interest criteria in the activities of judges. The experts also provide recommendations on the mechanisms of control of the on compliance with the laws in question of conflict of interest on the Council of Judges of Ukraine.
