Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was elected during its Plenary Session
On 30th November 2017, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was elected during its Plenary Session that was held in Klovskyi Palace. Ms. Valentyna Danishevska was appointed to the position of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
For the first time in Ukraine’s history, a woman became the Chief Justice of the highest judicial authority.
It should be noted that this is the third time in the world. Women have already held the offices of senior officials in Canada and the United Kingdom.
According to the Ukrainian legislation, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has been elected for the four years term. Mr. Bohdan Lvov has been elected as the Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by the decision of the Plenary Session on the proposal of the Chief Justice. The Chairman of the Commission Mr. Sergii Koziakov, the Chairman of the High Council of Justice Mr. Ihor Benedysiuk, and the Head of the Council of Judges of Ukraine
Ms. Valentyna Simonenko took part in the Plenary Session.
15th December 2017 was determined as the day when the Supreme Court began its work.
In symbolic terms, exactly 100 years ago, on 15th December 1917, the General Court, the highest judicial body of the Ukrainian National Republic, began its work.
The Plenary Session approved the Rules of Procedure of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, as well as the Regulations on the Supreme Court’s Secretariat, the structure of the Supreme Court’s Secretariat and the personnel list of the Secretariat. The Plenary Session established and approved the personal composition of the working groups of judges of the Supreme Court in order to develop:
- The strategy for ensuring the unity of judicial practice;
- The standards of a court decision structure;
- The communication strategy;
- Anti-corruption policy;
- The basic principles of judicial management (effective management of the Supreme Court activities).
In the course of the briefing, Ms. Valentyna Danishevska said: “Personally I hope that most of the people who have been selected to the Supreme Court are aware of their responsibility. I think that they are the most authoritative experts from those who have agreed to take part in the competition. Nobody wants to lose its credibility acquired throughout their lifetime. If I had no hope that something could be changed for the better, I would never risk my reputation”.
