Commission took part in workshop on the fight against corruption “Ethics and transparency of public authorities, corporate compliance”

On September 27-29 the representatives of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine took part in the workshop on the fight against corruption “Ethics and transparency of public authorities, corporate compliance.” The event was organized by Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce (CLDP) and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, together with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine and the State Fiscal Service, in conjunction with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), High Council of Justice and USAID.

The workshop investigated the impact of instituting and implementing government ethics, transparency and corporate compliance standards based on Ukrainian law and international standards within the context of customs, government procurement and judiciary reform. It also investigated Ukrainian and international consequences for government officials and corporate actors contravening the laws.

Among the participants the attendees included the officials of the Ministry for Economic Development and Trade, Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, State Fiscal Service, National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine, General Prosecution Office, the National Agency for prevention of corruption, the judicial authorities of Ukraine, American Chamber of Commerce, and European Business Association.

In addition to OECD and CBP, experts will include officials from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of the General Counsel (DOC), U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Courts.

The workshop aims to investigate the impact of instituting and implementing government ethics, transparency, and corporate compliance standards based on Ukrainian law and international standards, within the context of customs, government procurement, and judiciary reform; to improve the capacity of Government of Ukraine officials to understand the benefits of instituting and implementing government ethics and transparency standards, as well as the consequences of contravening those standards; to improve the capacity of the Ukrainian private sector to understand and adopt internationally recognized corporate compliance standards; to improve the capacity of the Ukrainian judiciary to understand international best practices of judicial ethics and to be able to fairly and effectively adjudicate corruption cases.

Created in 1992, the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) is a program of the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of the General Counsel that is uniquely tasked with providing technical assistance in the commercial law arena to the governments and private sectors of transitional countries in support of their economic development goals.

CLDP assists transitional countries by providing training and consultative services to government representatives, lawmakers, regulators, judges, lawyers, educators and other stakeholders.
