Conference dedicated to the anniversary of the functioning of the Supreme Court is taking place in Kyiv
On December 14, 2018, the Chairman and the Members of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine took part in the conference “The Role of the Supreme Court in Observing Human Rights and Freedoms” dedicated to the anniversary of the functioning of the newly formed Supreme Court.
Mr. Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine, Mr. Volodymyr Hroisman, Prime Minister of Ukraine, Ms. Valentyna Danishevska, Head of the Supreme Court, Mr. Regis Brillat, Special Advisor to the Council of Europe Secretary General congratulated the participants of the event. The conference was also attended by Ms. Hanne Juncher, Head of the Justice and Legal Co-operation Department of the Council of Europe; Mr. Fredrik Sundberg, Acting Head of the Department for the Execution of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights; Chief Justices of the of Supreme Courts of Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia; justices of the Supreme Court of Ukraine; Members of the High Council of Justice; judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine; representatives of international projects etc.
In the course the event, the achievements and challenges of the first year of functioning of the Supreme Court, the challenges in ensuring the rule of law and the effective protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms arising before the supreme courts of different countries were discussed.
In his speach, Mr. Sergii Koziakov emphasized main novelties of the selection of justices in the course of the competition to the Supreme Court.
Regarding the second competition for the positions of 78 judges of the Supreme Court, the Chairman of the HQCJU noted that there are currently about 9 candidates for one position. “Candidates have already taken anonymous written test and case study. Next week, the HQCJU will start making public the results of the exam and will proceed to conduct interviews with candidates. On Monday, December 17, 2018, the meeting of representatives of public associations will be held to appoint the members of the Public Integrity Council that will facilitate the selection of candidates for the positions of the Supreme Court justices”, said the Chairman of the Commission.
The event was organized by the Supreme Court together with the Council of Europe Project “Support for the implementation of judicial reform in Ukraine”.
