Discussion regarding filling vacancies in the Supreme Court of Ukraine took place in the premises of the Commission
On 5 May 2016 at the premises of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine was held a working meeting of its members and leadership of the Commission Secretariat. The meeting was devoted to the issue of holding competition for occupying vacant positions of judges in the Supreme Court of Ukraine.
As was noted by the Chairman of the Commission Mr. Sergii Koziakov, in view of a large number of vacancies and the critical importance of in banco work of the Supreme Court for the sustainable development of the judicial system of Ukraine, there is a need to hold a competition to the Supreme Court of Ukraine as soon as possible.
Mr. Koziakov told the Commission about requirements to professional and moral qualities of judges of supreme courts in foreign countries, including the USA, UK, Germany, Poland, New Zealand and Singapore.
Chairman of the Commission also told about the need to invite the Council of Judges of Ukraine to the preparation of the competition. He stressed on the importance of discussing candidates for judges to the Supreme Court of Ukraine in wide circles of professional judicial associations and other professional jurist unions, including involvement of legal mass media.
According to Mr. Koziakov, the fundamental issue is to involve to organizational process of holding competition and ensuring transparency of all procedures those international donors, who are contributing to the reform of Ukrainian judiciary.
The Commission Members Mr. Volodymyr Butenko, Mr. Andrii Vasylenko, Mrs. Tetiana Veselska, Mrs. Anastasiia Zaritska, Mr. Pavlo Lutsiuk, Mr. Sergii Prylypko, Mr. Mykola Mishyn, Mrs. Tetiana Shylova, Mr. Stanislav Shchotka and Chief of the Secretariat Mrs. Olena Ponomarenko suggested a number of ideas regarding algorithm of the competition preparation.
We are recalling that according to the Law of Ukraine “On Judiciary and the Status of Judges” it is a duty of the Commission to determine the terms and procedure of the competition.
