Meeting of the Chairman of the Commission with representatives of delegation from Ireland was held

On September 4, 2018 at the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine the meeting of Mr. Sergii Koziakov, Chairman of the Commission and Ms. Yuliia Tkachenko, Acting Head of International Cooperation Department of the Commission with Honorable Justice George Birmingham, President of the Court of Appeal of Ireland, Honorable Justice John MacMenamin, Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland and Ms. Helen Boyle, Irish Barrister took place.

Ms. Katrien Witteman, Senior Adviser on Criminal Justice and Judiciary of the European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM) in Ukraine, Mr. Yurii Sivologa, Expert on Criminal Justice of the EUAM, Ms. Nataliia Shuklina, Vice-Rector of the National School of Judges of Ukraine, Ms. Tetiana Pustovoitova, Head of International Cooperation Department of the NSJU, Mr. Heorhii Yatsunskyi, spokesperson of the NSJU also participated in the event.

Mr. Sergii Koziakov briefed Irish colleagues on the role of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine in ensuring the reform of the judicial system of Ukraine, in particular on the main procedures falling within the purview of the HQCJ.

He emphasized crucial results of the work carried out in recent years. Thus, among main achievements of judicial reform in Ukraine, the establishment of a new Supreme Court already functioning for nine months, qualification evaluation of almost all judges of courts of appeal as well as amendments to procedural Codes should be mentioned.

The Chairman of the Commission also informed the participants on the progress of recently announced competitions to the Supreme Court and to the High Anti-Corruption Court.

Foreign guests noted the transparency of the competition to the Supreme Court and the scale of procedures carried out by the Commission.

“We highly appreciate the work that you have succeeded in. A year ago we did not believe it, but now we are shocked at how you did it,” said Honorable Justice George Birmingham, adding that progress in implementing the judicial reform in Ukraine is truly impressive.

“There is a lot to learn from you,” said Honorable Justice John MacMenamin.

Visit of Irish delegation to Ukraine was organized by the European Union Advisory Mission in Ukraine together with the National School of Judges of Ukraine.
