Meeting of the Commission’s members with the international expert of the EU Project “Support to Reforms on the Development of the Rule of Law in Ukraine “PRAVO” was held

On 14 March 2018, the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine hosted the working meeting of the Commission’s members with the judge of the Amsterdam District Court, the international expert of the EU Project “PRAVO” Ms. Wilma Van Bentham, the Director of the National Courts Administration of the Republic of Lithuania, the international expert of the EU Project “PRAVO” Ms. Reda Moliene, and the national expert of the EU Project “PRAVO” Ms. Oksana Matiyash.

The main topic of the meeting was to discuss the issues related to the judicial reform in Ukraine, in particular with regard to the Supreme Court competition, the qualification assessment of judges and other procedures of the Commission.

Ms. Van Bentham paid a visit to Ukraine on invitation of the EU Project “PRAVO” as its international expert. The judge Wilma Van Bentham, together with the President of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice      Mr. Georg Stawa might evaluate the process of selecting judges to the Supreme Court in the context of European standards and best international practices.

The Commission’s members briefed the European colleague about the novelties in the judicial system of Ukraine. In particular, they talked about the main procedural aspects of the competition to the Supreme Court. “What we had to do is something absolutely new, we will not see any analogues, from which it is possible to borrow something. And we will be glad to be told how we can improve or perfect our work”, – said Mr. Stanislav Shchotka.

They also spoke about the qualification assessment of judges for their position compliance, the selection of candidates for the positions of local court judges, the launching of the competition to the High Court on Intellectual Property and the establishment of the High Anticorruption Court.

The members of the Commission promised the international experts to provide their overall support to ensure the most comprehensive assessment of the competition to the Supreme Court.

At the meeting the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine was represented by the Secretary of the Qualification Chamber Mr. Stanislav Shchotka and the member of the Qualification Chamber Mr. Taras Lukash.
