Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Council of Europe Support to the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Ukraine Project took place

On October 2, 2019, the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine hold an open meeting of the Steering Committee of the Council of Europe Support to the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Ukraine Project.

Representatives of the High Council of Justice, the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine, the National School of Judges of Ukraine, the Supreme Court, the Council of Judges of Ukraine, the Bar Association of Ukraine, and the Council of Europe took part in the event.

At the beginning of the meeting participants were greeted by the Deputy Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine Olena Lytvynenko and the Project Manager of the Justice and Legal Cooperation Department of the Council of Europe Andrii Kavakin.

CoE representatives informed national partners about priority issues on the agenda of cooperation with Ukraine, as well as the latest news from the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine.

In addition, the leadership of the CoE Supporting the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Ukraine Project presented the main achievements of the Project in 2018–2019 and discussed the priority areas of work.

Sergii Koziakov expressed his gratitude to the CoE colleagues for the recent evaluation of the judicial reform for 2014-2018 and its compliance with the CoE standards and recommendations, as well as the June survey on the level of trust to court among Ukrainian citizens.

“We really appreciate and always await for the opinions of the Council of Europe. They are not always pleasant, but always fair, and we are constantly trying to react to them”, added the Chairman of the Commission.

The CoE Project's national partners evaluated the common developments over the reporting period and spoke about possible improvements to the interaction.

The Support to Judicial Reform in Ukraine Project is being implemented with funding from the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is a continuation of the work undertaken by the Council of Europe on the reform of the judiciary in Ukraine. It aims at further approximation of the Ukrainian justice system to Council of Europe standards and recommendations.
