Meeting with representatives of the EU Pravo-Justice Project on the results of competitions to the High Anti-Corruption Court and the Supreme Court

On March 14, 2019, the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine hosted a working meeting of Mr. Sergii Koziakov, Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Stanislav Shchotka, Deputy Chairman of the Commission and Ms. Yuliia Tkachenko, Deputy Head of the International Cooperation Department of the Commission Secretariat with Mr. Georg Stawa and Ms. Anna Adamska, international experts of the EU Pravo-Justice Project.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss recently announced results of the competitions to the Supreme Court, the High Anti-Corruption Court and the Appeal Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court.

Representatives of the Commission informed the experts about procedural peculiarities of the last stages of the competition and thanked the Project for the support, which is important to the Commission, in particular, in assessing moral and psychological qualities and general skills of candidates for the positions of judges.

In turn, international experts highlighted the high standards that the Commission was guided by during the selection of judges, as well as the uniqueness of these procedures from the standpoint of their openness.

The parties discussed future areas of cooperation in the context of procedures for the selection and evaluation of judges in Ukraine.

The EU Pravo-Justice Project implemented with the financial support of the European Union is aimed at consolidating pan-European reforms in the field of justice. The Project involves experts from the various EU Member States and will continue till the end of the year 2020. The main Project’s activities are, inter alia, assisting Ukrainian authorities in the judiciary reset and selection of new Supreme Court justices, the establishment of the Judicial Reform Council, restructuring the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, reforming registers and e-justice, facilitating probation service etc.
