Representatives of the Commission and delegation of Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project discussed the communication system of the Commission
In the framework of the visit of the delegation of Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project, on 5 October 2016 regular working meeting of the Commission Secretariat with representatives of the judiciary in Canada was held.
The Canadian delegation included the Hon. Derek Green, Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Hon. Paul Crampton, Chief Justice, Federal Court of Canada, Mr. Witold Tymowski, Head of the Law Clerk Program, Federal Court/CAS, Ms. Veronique Joly, Executive Director, Judicial Appointments and Senior Legal Counsel, Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada, Mr. Prasanna Ranganathan, Program Manager, International Programs, Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada and Mrs. Nataliya Horodetsky, Senior Program Manager, International Programs, Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada.
The Commission was represented by Mrs. Svitlana Maksymova, Chief Specialist of the Sector for Working Support of the Commission leadership of the Commission Secretariat, Mrs. Polina Kazakevych, Head of the International Cooperation Division of the Commission Secretariat.
Chief Justice, Federal Court of Canada the Hon. Paul Crampton briefly told the Commission about peculiarities of internal and external communication of judges in Canada.
In addition, he described the institutional system for communication activities of the judiciary in Canada and peculiarities of displaying the news about certain events, for example, news on the process for selection of judges to the Supreme Court of Canada.
In particular, during the meeting the participants were discussing the issues of communication policy and strategy of the Commission and its implementation, organization of internal and external communication, interaction with other judicial bodies and judicial self-governance within this field.
Mrs. Svitlana Maksymova stressed on the need to establish a Single Communication Press Center of the Judiciary in Ukraine. She also noted that the establishment of such a Center will provide efficient and multilateral communication (authorities - judiciary, courts - citizens, courts - courts, etc.). This body would expand interagency communication capacity of the judiciary, lead to a unified information policy and enable to coordinate information activity.
Creating a Single Communication Press Center of the Judiciary would enable faster processing of journalistic requests and provide informational and methodological assistance to media, reporting about the work of the Ukrainian judiciary.
During the meeting the participants discussed the possibility of filming several educational videos displaying the judicial reform process and step-by-step instructions for those wishing to become a candidate to the Supreme Court.
The next meeting of the Commission with representatives of the Canadian delegation will be held to sum up the results of the previous meetings and to determine future priorities in providing technical assistance to the Commission in the framework of Support to Judicial Reform Project.
