The Commission took part in a roundtable “The Supreme Court: the results of the first competition”
On 7th of September 2017 in Odessa, there was held a roundtable “The Supreme Court: the results of the first competition” organized by the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” together with the Ukrainian Bar Association.
The experts of the EU Project, Ukrainian Bar Association, International Public Organization “Universal Examination Network UENet”, the members of Public Integrity Council, attorneys, lawyers, judges and candidates for the positions of judges of the Supreme Court were participating in the discussion. The High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine was represented by the member of the Commission Mr. Taras Lukash.
Participants of a roundtable have discussed the stages of the competition to the Supreme Court, in particular, the features of the anonymous written test, practical task and testing of individual moral and psychological qualities, and also interview process and candidates rating formation. Moreover, the participants have outlined the perspectives of the functioning of the new Supreme Court.
During the speech, Mr. Taras Lukash told about the results of the competition: “I have a restrained optimism on the first competition to the Supreme Court. It was held under the new terms and conditions, although, many people even did not believe in it. It is a positive fact”. Also, the member of the Commission noticed that individual procedures should be improved, taking into account the gained experience and available proposals. The quality of the Supreme Court work can be evaluated after it would start its routine operations in a regular mode only.

The EU Project “|Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” is implemented with the financial support of the European Union provides assistance in the development of a common strategy for reforming the justice sector. This initiative, lasting for 3 years, unites most institutions in a sphere of justice in Ukraine with the reason to develop and implement a general and collective strategy of reform. The strategy shall be implemented with the help of coordination mechanism between the institutions of the justice sector and will be implemented through the guaranteed long-term financing of the Government of Ukraine.
