The competition for occupying a position of judge in Supreme Court of Ukraine – is a national project of Ukraine
On 27 July 2016 a meeting of leadership of public administration bodies responsible for the formation of the new judicial corpus – the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine and the High Council of Justice – was held with the representatives of the leading domestic media.
The aim of the meeting was to establish a communication link concerning covering the topic of judicial reforms.
The communication was held in the form of round-table so that the media representatives could not only ask questions on the subjects they were interested in, but also share their position and proposals as to the improvement of their cooperation with the HQCJU and HCJ.
Among the participants of the discussion there were Mr. Sergii Koziakov, Chairman of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine, Mr. Ihor Benedysiuk, Chairman of the High Council of Justice, Mr. Oleksandr Sasevich, the member of the Council of Judges of Ukraine, and the representatives of more than 30 media – editors, journalists, bloggers, who deal with the covering the topics of judiciary activity.
During the meeting the following issues were discussed:
- what changes will occur in the activity of the HQCJU and HCJ: new competencies in the context of constitutional changes and new reduction of the Law of Ukraine “On Judiciary and the Status of Judges”;
- first results of the initial qualification assessment held by the HQCJU. Who and why didn’t pass the assessment?
- purification of the judiciary: how many “maidan” judges were recommended to dismissal;
- new Supreme Court. Who and under what conditions has a chance to become a judge of the highest judicial body of Ukraine.
Mr. Sergii Koziakov, the Chairman of the Commission, underlined the importance of constitutional changes, which had recently taken place influencing the judiciary. Thus, he paid attention to the importance of the establishment of new 3-level judicial system. He also noted that the competition for new Supreme Court positions will be unprecedented in the history of Ukraine, because it’s first time when 200 members of Supreme Court are selected, at the same time not only judges can offer their candidacy, but also scientists and lawyers.
Due to the importance of this competition for Ukraine Mr. Sergii Koziakov invited journalists to fruitful cooperation concerning the topic covering and also paid attention that the competition for Supreme Court positions can be announced as a national project.
The discussion was lively and constructive.
At the end of the discussion the media representatives expressed their wish for regular holding of similar meetings.
