The initial qualification assessment of judges has been started

The High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine on 17 February 2016 has started the initial qualification assessment of judges. The first 100 judges who submitted statements to the Commission on electing them to the judicial office for lifetime period would pass through this procedure the first.

The Commission has formed five groups and on 17 February 2016 the first group (20 individuals) would complete the anonymous test and perform practical tasks. In a week first group is expected to hold an interview with the Members of the Qualification Chamber of the Commission in order to discuss their judicial dossier. Except performance indicators studying, the information relating to property and wealth of judges will be examined.  

The purpose of the initial qualification assessment of judges is to verify the ability to administer justice.

If the judge does not pass the assessment, he or she will be sent for training at the National School of Judges of Ukraine. Only in case of the second assessment failure, the judge should be recommended for dismissal from the office.

After the completion of the qualification assessment by judges who are applying for the lifetime election, the Commission will start the assessment of all judges of the country, which accounts about 8,000 people.
