The meeting of the Steering Committee of the Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project was held

On November 9, 2020, within the online mode, the meeting of the Steering Committee of the Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project took place.

The representatives of the Global Affairs Canada, Canada’s National Judicial Institute, the Office of the Ombudsman for Federal Judicial Affairs of Canada, the High Council of Justice, the Supreme Court, the State Judicial Administration of Ukraine, the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine, the National School of Judges of Ukraine, the Judicial Protection Service, local and appellate courts, as well as experts and representatives of the Support to Judicial Reform Project (hereinafter the Project) participated in the event.

The Field Director of the Project Lubomyr Markevych addressed the participants of the event and presented eighteen months work results as well as shared plans for future cooperation. He said that the Project contributes to the consolidation of democracy in Ukraine and strengthening all the elements of the judiciary. Today, the Project is working in three areas: improving the integrity and gender sensitivity of the application of the law by the judicial system of Ukraine, increasing the level of transparency and objectivity in the selection of judges, and the efficiency of judicial administration.

The High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine’s Secretariat was represented at the event by Deputy Head of the Secretariat Oleksandr Bystrushkin and Acting Head of the International Cooperation Department Denys Kuznetsov.

Oleksandr Bystrushkin thanked the Project for its support in organizing training for the Commission’s members in May 2019 and pointed out that such events would be important for the newly elected members of the Commission, as the level of awareness and training will determine the efficiency and speed of work which are extremely important in the conditions of personnel crisis in the judicial system.

Besides, Oleksandr Bystrushkin assured that the knowledge and skills acquired by the Secretariat’s staff during the training “Effective Communication and Conflict Resolution” in February–March 2020 continue to be applied in the everyday work.

In turn, Senior Project Officer of the Embassy of Canada in Ukraine Valerii Oliinyk stressed that despite the absence of a new composition of the High Qualification Commission for Judges of Ukraine during the year and quarantine restrictions, the Secretariat continues to find ways to improve the body and the judiciary as a whole.
