The Member of the Commission Mr. Mykhailo Makarchuk delivered a speech at the forum “Access to Justice in the East of Ukraine”
On 14-15 December 2017, a forum “Access to Justice in the East of Ukraine” was held in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region.
The discussion was devoted to the problematic issues of the judicial system, especially the first instance courts in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in the context of the conflict in the East of Ukraine and finding common ways of their solution.
Judges of local and appellate courts in Donetsk and Lugansk Regions, judges of the Supreme Court, leading national scholars, practitioners, representatives of public authorities and civil society took part in the discussion.
The High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine was represented by the Secretary of the Chamber for Selection and Public Service of Judges Mr. Mykhailo Makarchuk. He spoke about the Commission’s activities regarding the preparation of a reserve of local judges, as well as qualification assessment of current judges.
The participants discussed the mechanisms for ensuring access to justice in the East of Ukraine, in particular in the communities adjacent to the differentiation line, the application of the rule of law in the legal proceedings in the context of an armed conflict.
The event was organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine.
