The XIV Extraordinary Congress of Judges of Ukraine is continued
On 14th November 2017, the XIV Extraordinary Congress of Judges of Ukraine continued its session. One of the key issue of the meeting was the filling of vacant positions in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. The delegates discussed 6 nominees of 19 who were successfully interviewed by the Council of Judges of Ukraine. Mr. Viktor Gorodovenko, the Chairman of Zaporizhzhya region Court of Appeals obtained the majority of votes, namely 186, and became a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.
The Rules of Procedure of The Congress of Judges were amended by its decision. Also, the Regulation on the Council of Judges of Ukraine was amended.
The Chairman of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine Mr. Sergii Koziakov gave a briefing during the break. He told the audience about the completion of the competition to the Supreme Court that lasted for almost a year. The Chairman of the HQCJ emphasized that the competition had been unprecedented for Ukraine and noted that now the Commission faced new challenges - the qualification assessment of judges and the competition to the High Court on Intellectual Property. He also emphasized the fruitful work of the Secretariat during the competition.
Mr. Sergii Koziakov called on the public to allow the new Supreme Court to start work and make their first decisions, and only then evaluate its work.
The Congress came to its end. The Council of Judges of Ukraine should determine the date of the next Congress. This may be March 2018.
