Working meeting of the Commission with representatives of the Canadian judiciary
The working meeting of the Commission Secretariat with representatives of the Canadian judicial authorities was held on 3 October 2016.
The meeting was organized in the framework of Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project and was dedicated to procedure for selection and appointment of judges in Canada at the provincial and federal levels, as well as at the level of the Supreme Court of Canada.
The Canadian delegation included the Hon. Derek Green, Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Hon. Robert James Bauman, Chief Justice of British Columbia, the Hon. Paul Crampton, Chief Justice, Federal Court of Canada, Mr. Witold Tymowski, Head of the Law Clerk Program, Federal Court/CAS, Mr. Donald Chiasson, Legal and Education Director, International Cooperation Group, National Judicial Institute, Ms. Veronique Joly, Executive Director, Judicial Appointments and Senior Legal Counsel, Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada, Mrs. Nataliya Horodetsky, Senior Program Manager, International Programs, Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada and Mr. Igor Osyka, Manager of Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project.
At the meeting the Commission was represented by Mr. Mykola Patriuk, Deputy Chairman of the Commission, Chairman of the Disciplinary Chamber, Mr. Mykhailo Makarchuk, Secretary of the Disciplinary Chamber of the Commission, Mr. Andrii Vasylenko, Member of the Qualification Chamber of the Commission, Mr. Taras Neshyk, Director of the Professional Qualification of Judges and Judicial Candidates Department of the Commission Secretariat and Mr. Maksym Zinchenko, Head of Division for Maintenance of Judicial Dossier of the Professional Qualification of Judges and Judicial Candidates Department of the Commission Secretariat.
During the meeting the Executive Director, Judicial Appointments and Senior Legal Counsel of the Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada Ms. Veronique Joly told the Members of the Commission about the procedure for selection and appointment of judges in Canada.
In addition, experts from Canada shared their experiences on the procedure of selection and appointment of judges in Canada at the provincial and territorial level and at the level of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Deputy Chairman of the Commission, Chairman of the Disciplinary Chamber Mr. Mykola Patriuk thanked the Canadian colleagues for providing information materials concerning the procedure of selection and appointment of judges in Canada, which the Commission Members reviewed accurately and applies in implementing its procedures.
Mykola Patriuk noted that the main task for today is holding the competition to the new Supreme Court. Thus, it is very important that Canadian experts have provided their advices and opinions regarding regulations that will be accompanying the competition process.
