Working meeting between the Commission Chairman and the Head of the Department of Justice and Legal Cooperation, Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, Council of Europe, 17 February, 2016

Mr. Sergii Koziakov, the Chairman of the Commission and Mrs. Hanne Junker, Head of the Department of Justice and Legal Cooperation of the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe held a working meeting at the premises of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine on 17 February 2016. The meeting was also attended by Mrs. Polina Kazakevych, Head of International Cooperation Division of the Commission's Secretariat, Mrs. Lilit Daneghian, Coordinator of the Project “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine” and Mr. Andrii Kavakin, Manager of the Project “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine”.

Mr. Sergii Koziakov has informed the European Colleagues on beginning the initial qualification assessment of those judges of general competence local courts, who have applied to the Commission with appropriate statements on the recommendation for lifetime appointments, including stages, procedures and general criteria for assessment.

The Parties has exchanged their views on perspectives of cooperation of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine within the new Project of the Council of Europe “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine”, which aims to secure the independence, fairness and efficiency of the judiciary by supporting Ukraine in reforming the sector of justice in accordance with the standards and recommendations of the Council Europe.

However Mrs. Hanne Junker declared that the Council of Europe is ready to continue cooperation with Ukraine on this issue.

Mr. Sergіi Koziakov thanked colleagues from the Council of Europe and members of the Project for support and expressed hope for fruitful cooperation in framework of the Council of Europe Project “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine.”
