The Commission Chairman held a meeting with the Director of the Office of the Directorate-General on Human Rights and the Rule of Law of the Council of Europe and Special Advisor of the Council of Europe Secretary General for Ukraine, 3 June, 2016

On 3rd June 2016 the Chairman of the Commission Mr. Sergii Koziakov and the Member of Qualification Chamber of the Commission Mr. Andrii Vasylenko conducted a meeting with the Director of the Office of the Directorate-General on Human Rights and the Rule of Law of the Council of Europe Mr. Christos Giakoumopoulos, Special Advisor of the Council of Europe Secretary General for Ukraine Mr. Regis Brillat and newly elected Head of the Office of the Council of Europe for Ukraine Mr. Morten Enberg.

Mr. Sergii Koziakov informed European colleagues about essential activities performed by the Commission in order to fulfill its duties and future challenges connected with reform of the judiciary.

The following questions were discussed during the meeting, such as: the issue of realization of the draft law “On the Judiciary and status of the judges” and the issue of constitutional amendments in part of justice.

Mr. Andrii Vasylenko the Member of the Qualification Chamber of the Commission told about essential parts of this draft law considering the main purpose to renew judicial personnel.

Participants of the meeting discussed separate direction of cooperation within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine”, namely it is to suggest an expert assessment conducted by the Council of Europe of the project documents related to the candidate selection to the Supreme Court of Ukraine and candidates to be a judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, which were drafted by the Commission.

In the meeting also took part Mr. Andry Kavakin, Project manager of the European Council Project for “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine” and Mrs. Polina Kazakevich, the Head of International Coordination Department

Finally, the representatives of the Council of Europe extend thanks for comprehensive information concerning discussed issues and expressed their assurance in further fruitful cooperation between the Commission and the Council of Europe.
