210 judges took an oath of a judge and acquired powers

On July 28, 2020, a solemn swearing-in ceremony for judges appointed for the first time to the position of a judge, with the participation of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy was held on the territory of the Mariinsky Palace. The solemn ceremony was also attended by the heads of judicial and self-governmental bodies.

It is worth recalling that a person appointed to the position of a judge for the first time acquires the powers of a judge after taking the oath of a judge during a solemn ceremony in the presence of the President of Ukraine (Article 57 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Judiciary and the Status of Judges”).

The solemn oath of the judge was taken by the participants of the selection process of 2012, 2013 and 2017. By decrees of the President of Ukraine, they were appointed to the positions of judges for the first time in local general courts under the proposals of the High Council of Justice. In particular, applications were submitted for the appointment of 431 candidates for the positions of judges. These are candidates whose recommendations were sent to the HCJ by the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine based on the results of the competitive selection. On August 7, 2019, based on the results of the competition announced on July 02, 2019, the HQCJ submitted recommendations to the High Council of Justice on the appointment of 467 candidates as judges of local general courts (for more details, click the link).

During the speech, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed: “Independence, objectivity, honesty and integrity, observance of ethical norms, equal treatment to all parties of the court hearing, competence and diligence. I believe that these Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct will be the main and integral conditions of your daily very important and complex work.”

The head of state said that the judge should start his day with the words of the oath and should remember it whenever making a decision. “As of today, each of you is the face of the judiciary. And what this face will depend only on you. I believe that you will be worthy of the high title of the judge. You must always remember that you administer justice not on behalf of individual interests, but on behalf of Ukraine”, – the President said.
