232 judges took an oath of a judge and acquired powers
On December 15, 2020, at the premises of the National Center “Ukrainian House”, a solemn swearing-in ceremony for judges appointed for the first time to the position of a judge, with the participation of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy was held. The solemn ceremony was also attended by the heads of judicial and self-governmental bodies.
It is worth recalling that a person appointed to the position of a judge for the first time acquires the powers after taking the oath of a judge during a solemn ceremony in the presence of the President of Ukraine (Article 57 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Judiciary and the Status of Judges”).
The solemn oath was taken by judges appointed by the decrees of the President of Ukraine within a period from July to December 2020 upon the submission of the High Council of Justice. These are the candidates whose recommendations were sent to the HCJ by the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine based on the results of the competitive selection. On August 7, 2019, based on the results of the competition announced on July 02, 2019, the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine submitted recommendations to the High Council of Justice on the appointment of 467 candidates as judges of local general courts (for more details, click the link).
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the judges on taking the oath and reminded them that on this day Ukraine also celebrates the Day of Court Employees, introduced 20 years ago.
“I wish everyone to strengthen the level of trust of Ukrainian citizens in the judiciary through the daily and hard work, professional qualities and human principles, and always to meet the high title of “judge” and such respectful addressing “Your Honor”, the President of Ukraine said.
