EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”: implementation status and plans for 2016

On 24 November 2015 at the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine the meeting of the Steering Committee of the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine” was held. The event was attended by Mr. Sergii Koziakov, Chairman of the Commission and Mr. Andrii Vasylenko, Member of the Qualification Chamber of the Commission.

Mr. Serhii Shkliar, Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine and Ambassador Jan Tombiński, Head of the Delegation of the EU to Ukraine made opening speeches. In view of the reforms taking place in Ukraine and the desire of public authorities to implement European standards in their work the speakers stressed on importance of the Project.

The High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine is one of the Project’s partners. As was noted by the Commission Chairman Mr. Sergii Koziakov, the Commission regularly participates in events, organized by the Project. He personally observes the work of the Council for Judicial Reform and Constitutional Commission and believes that everything is conducted very effectively and transparently.

Mr. Sergii Koziakov thanked the Project for the cooperation, including assistance in preparing for the assessment procedure of judges, which has not started yet, but the Commission still is ready to hold it. The Chairman of the Commission said that the Commission will further keep looking for a fruitful cooperation with the Project.

At the event there was a presentation of the Project’s Working Plan for October 2015 - June 2016. The next meeting of the Steering Committee will be held in June of the next year.

The Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine,” funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, began its work in 2015.

The EU Project consists of six key components that are managed by a group of international and national experts. It aims to develop general strategy in reforming justice sector, police and bodies with investigating powers, as well as in the prosecution authorities; in access to justice and the right to defense; in independence of the judiciary; in preventing and combating corruption.
