Judiciary of undisputed integrity is the basis of democracy and the rule of law. Commentary on the Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct

We would like to draw your attention to the Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct and Commentary on them, the unofficial translation of which into Ukrainian was prepared with the assistance of the Canadian-Ukrainian Project “Support to Judicial Reform in Ukraine,” funded by the Government of Canada through the Global Affairs Canada.

The Commentary includes, in particular, 6 sections of values: independence, impartiality, integrity, propriety, equality, competence and diligence.

In the Preface to the Commentary, Christopher G. Weeramantry, Chairperson of the Judicial Integrity Group, observes that a judiciary of undisputed integrity is the bedrock institution essential for ensuring compliance with democracy and the rule of law: “Even when all other protections fail, it provides a bulwark to the public against any encroachments on its rights and freedoms under the law”.

“A judiciary of undisputed integrity is the bedrock institution essential for ensuring compliance with democracy and the rule of law. Even when all other protections fail, it provides a bulwark to the public against any encroachments on its rights and freedoms under the law”, stresses Christopher. G. Weeramantry.

The High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine applies the Bangalore Principles and the Commentary on them during the qualification evaluation of judges for their compliance with the occupied position as well as in the competitive procedures.

You can get acquainted with the text of the Bangalore Principles and the Commentary on them published in English also on the official website of the Commission.
