Members of the Commission were briefed about the international online dispute resolution practice

On 24 January 2018, in High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine was held a meeting between the management of the Commission and the representatives of the USAID New Justice Program and an international expert on online dispute resolution.

Mr. Sergii Koziakov, Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Andrii Kozlov and Mr. Taras Lukash, members of the Commission, as well as Mr. David Michael Vaughn, Chief of Party of the USAID “New Justice” Program, Ms. Natalia Petrova Deputy Chief of Party of the USAID “New Justice” Program and Ms. Shannon Salter, international expert on online Dispute Resolution and Administrative Law, Chair of the Civil Resolution Tribunal, Vancouver, participated in the discussion.

During the meeting the Canadian expert introduced to the Commission members the experience of Canada, the United States and Europe in the field of online dispute resolution. The parties discussed the availability of resources and needs for the implementation of a pilot project on the consideration of such disputes on the basis of certain courts in Ukraine.

Ms. Shannon Salter spoke about the most optimal ways for implementing online dispute resolution in Ukraine. She noted that the consideration of cases in such a regime would contribute to their timely resolution and reduce the workload of courts.

Recall that on 19-20 September 2017, the Conference “Online Courts and Dispute Resolution: Improving Access to Justice in Ukraine” was held in Kyiv. According to its results the presentation of opinions and recommendations was made.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) “New Justice” Program started its work in Ukraine in October 2016.

The purpose of the Program is to support the judiciary, Government, Parliament, Civil Society and people of Ukraine in the implementation of judicial reform given the constitutional amendments of 2016 and The Ukraine Judiciary Development Strategy 2015-2020.

The Program builds on the achievements of previous USAID projects “Ukraine: Rule of Law” and “Fair Justice” and uses their achievements for coordination of close cooperation with Ukrainian partners, USAID and US Government projects and other projects of international donor organizations in Ukraine.
