Monthly meeting of the rule of law donors and implementers was held

On 1st June 2016 representatives of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine took part in the regular meeting of donors and projects\programs implementers in the field of rule of law, organized by the USAID FAIR Justice Project.

Among the attendees of the meeting there were representatives of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, the Higher Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases, the State Judicial Administration of Ukraine, the National School of Judges of Ukraine, the National Ukrainian Bar Association, NGO “German-Ukrainian jurisprudential dialogue,” Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, the US Embassy in Ukraine, the European Union Advisory Mission, International Development Law Organization, the EU Project “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Ukraine”, Ukrainian-Canadian Project “Quality and Assessable Legal Aid in Ukraine”.

The featured speaker of the event was Dr. Pim Albers, international expert of the USAID Fair Justice Project (Netherlands). Dr. Albers told about the assessment of the judges` work quality in the European Countries comparing to the other nations around the globe. Participants of the meeting discussed experience of the following states, such as: Finland, Netherlands, Moldova, Serbia, Ukraine and other member-states of the Council of Europe. Methodical textbook “Application of the Court Operation Assessment System” was presented by the USAID Fair Justice Project during the speech.

At the end of the meeting, the participants exchanged news about current activities in strengthening the rule of law.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) FAIR Justice Project has been working in Ukraine from October 2011 to promote judicial reform.

The goal of the Project is to strengthen the rule of law through enhancing judicial independence, improving transparency and accountability of the judiciary, raising awareness of the public about the judiciary to increase public trust and confidence.

Objectives of the Project are to assist in harmonizing the national legislative and regulatory framework for the judicial reform with European and international standards of judicial accountability and independence; strengthen the accountability and transparency of key judicial institutions; enhance the professionalism and effectiveness of the judiciary; increase the role of civil society organizations as advocates for and monitors of the judiciary; implement the Law of Ukraine “On lustration of the authorities” and “On restoring confidence in the judiciary in Ukraine”.
