Presentation of the model training course “Professional Responsibility of a Lawyer” was held

On September 6, 2018, Mr. Sergii Prylypko, member of the Qualification Chamber of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine took part in the presentation of the model training course “Professional Responsibility of a Lawyer” developed with the support of the USAID New Justice Program in order to promote the modernization of the content and teaching methods in law schools in Ukraine.

Welcome remarks were delivered by Mr. Yurii Rashkevych, Deputy Minister of Education of Ukraine; Mr. Sergii Prylypko, member of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine; Mr. Vladislav VlasiukDirector General of the Directorate for Human Rights, Access to Justice and Legal Awareness of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine; Mr. Thomas White, Director of the USAID Democracy and Governance Office; Ms. Nataliia Petrova, Deputy Director of the USAID New Justice Program.

“Legal education is the foundation on which the entire legal system is built. If there are no competent professionals, the justice system reform will be stalled,” said Mr. Serhii Prylypko.

Mr. James Moliterno, Professor of Law at the Washington and Lee University School of Law (Lexington, Virginia, USA), international expert on legal education, the USAID New Justice Program told the participants about the relevance of the training course “Professional Responsibility of a Lawyer” and promoting such a course in higher educational establishments of other countries.

The training course developers presented a brief overview of this course and showed the importance of teaching it in an interactive format, with modern teaching methods applied.

At the end of the event, the participants agreed on an action plan for introducing the training course.

The USAID New Justice Program started its work in October 2016.

The Program is implemented to support the judiciary, Government, Parliament, Civil Society and the people of Ukraine in the implementation of judicial reform taking into account the Constitutional amendments 2016 in Strategy for reforming the judiciary structure, the judiciary proceedings and related legal institutions and the Action Plan for its implementation for 2015–2020.

The USAID New Justice Program builds on the achievements of the USAID Ukraine Rule of Law Project and USAID FAIR Justice Project and will use its progress for coordination of close cooperation with Ukrainian partners, USAID and US Government Projects and other projects of International donor organizations in Ukraine.
