Regular meeting of representatives of international technical assistance projects in the field of strengthening the rule of law took place

On September 4, 2019, a regular meeting of representatives of international technical assistance projects working on strengthening the rule of law, which was organized by the USAID New Justice Program, took place in Kyiv.

The High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine was represented at the event by the Chairman of the Commission Mr. Sergii Koziakov and the Commission Member Mr. Oleksandr Drozdov.

The results of the National Unified Specialized Admission Test for admission to the Master’s program in Law and International Law in 2019, which was implemented by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine to improve the quality of training of national lawyers, were discussed at the event.

Speeches were delivered by Mr. Oleg Sharov, Director General of the Directorate of Higher Education and Adult Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and Mr. Ivan Shemelynets, Acting Director General of the Directorate for Human Rights, Access to Justice and Legal Awareness of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. They spoke about the importance of the Unified Specialized Admission Test and its positive impact on the development of legal education in Ukraine.

Representatives of the Commission expressed their support for the introduction of a unified system of assessment when admitting to the Master’s Programme in Ukraine and emphasized the need to involve practitioners in educational processes to form students’ practical skills, as well as better understanding of the future profession.

The participants of the event also expressed their suggestions on ways to improve admission examination and to create a single unified evaluation system in the framework of training of future lawyers, judges, prosecutors and notaries.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) New Justice Program has been operating in Ukraine since October 2016.

The purpose of the program is to provide support to the judiciary, the Government, the Parliament, civil society and the people of Ukraine in implementing judicial reform, taking into account the constitutional changes of 2016 and the Strategy for the reform of the judicial system, justice and related legal institutes for 2015-2020.

The New Justice program builds on the achievements of previous USAID Programs in Ukraine: Rule of Law and Fair Justice projects and uses their achievements to coordinate close cooperation with Ukrainian partners, USAID projects, the US Government and other projects of international donor organizations in Ukraine.
