The members of the Commission took part in the event devoted to the issue of optimizing the judicial system of Ukraine
On 17th of October 2017, the Chairman of the Commission Mr. Sergii Koziakov, the members of the Commission Ms. Valentyna Ustymenko, Mr. Stanislav Shchotka and Mr. Taras Lukash took part in the roundtable “Optimization of the Ukrainian Judicial System: problems and perspectives”.

Mr. Zenoviy Kholodniuk, the head of the USAID “New Justice” Program Mr. David Michael Vaughn, the Chairman of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine Mr. Sergii Koziakov have spoken with welcome speeches at the opening ceremony.
During the roundtable, parties have discussed a question of the State Judicial Administration achievements in preparation for the introduction of changes to the court map of Ukraine. The tools and leading experiences that could be used to implement the reform of the consolidation of the courts were presented and discussed.
As Mr. Sergii Koziakov noted, the processes in Ukrainian proceedings in recent years are perhaps the most significant. According to the Chairman of the Commission, the State Judicial Administration is carrying out extremely deep statistical and intellectual work on the activities of the courts of Ukraine and this work needs to be harmonized according to the judicial reform.
Mr. Sergii Koziakov called on the judges to take an active part in the reform process and at the same time make their proposals. If there are certain critical signals, then they should be known in advance in order this could influence the overall result.
There was also discussed the issue of the working load of judges, the optimal number of judges and the optimal size of the judicial body to execute its tasks in the general context of judicial reform.
Among the participants of the roundtable, there were representatives of the Supreme Council of Justice, the Council of Judges of Ukraine, Chairmen of the courts and employees of the courts, international experts, and representatives of international donor organizations and technical assistance projects that work in the field of strengthening the rule of law.
The work of the roundtable will end on 18th of October 2017. The event is supported by the USAID “New Justice” Program and the State Judicial Administration of Ukraine.
