Working meeting of the Commission Chairman with representatives of the judiciary of Canada
During a seven-day visit of the Canadian delegation in the framework of the Support to Judicial Reform Project on 6 October 2016 there was held the closing meeting of the Commission Chairman Mr. Sergii Koziakov with representatives of Canadian judiciary. It was aimed to discuss the results of the previous meetings and to determine future priorities in providing technical assistance to the Commission within the Project.
The Canadian delegation included the Hon. Derek Green, Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Hon. Robert James Bauman, Chief Justice of British Columbia, the Hon. Paul Crampton, Chief Justice, Federal Court of Canada, Mr. Donald Chiasson, Legal and Education Director, International Cooperation Group, National Judicial Institute, Ms. Veronique Joly, Executive Director, Judicial Appointments and Senior Legal Counsel, Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada, Mrs. Nataliya Horodetsky, Senior Program Manager, International Programs, Office for the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada and Mr. Igor Osyka, Manager of Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project.
At the meeting Mr. Koziakov told Canadian counterparts about the activities and powers of the Commission in light of the constitutional amendments and the new Law of Ukraine “On the Judiciary and the Status of Judges” of 2 June 2016
№ 1402-VIII.
Mr. Koziakov also informed the guests about the current preparations to the competition to the new Supreme Court. He stressed that this a new powers of the Commission, stipulated by the Law of Ukraine “On the Judiciary and the Status of Judges,” which came into force on 30 September 2016.
In particular, Mr. Koziakov noted that the Commission is preparing for the competition to the Supreme Court, taking into account the international experience, relevant standards of independence and accountability of the judiciary.
Whereas, Canadian experts assured Ukrainian colleagues in their readiness to provide their advices, as well as to share experience and available materials on the results of the competition to the Supreme Court of Canada.
In addition, during the working meeting participants discussed the transfer of disciplinary proceedings to the High Council of Justice, further priority areas of cooperation and expressed readiness for further cooperation in the framework of the new Ukrainian-Canadian Support to Judicial Reform Project.
